My younger brother is working right now in Canada. And last year he told me that they were celebrating a feast called Thanksgiving. I was a little surprised to learn that Canada is also having their own Thanksgiving day celebration. Now, I searched through the net and came up with some interesting facts.
Thanksgiving is a major annual holiday in Unites States of America. However, the average American would be surprised to find out that Thanksgiving is a common holiday in other countries as well. Americans usually assumed that Thanksgiving as originating in the United States. Our ideas are that Pilgrims and Indians celebrated together due to the fact that the Indians have helped the Pilgrims survive in America. Most Americans seem surprised by the celebration of Thanksgiving in other countries. It is believed that it is an American holiday because at the time when the Indians helped the Pilgrims survive in America they shared a grand feast.
Canada also observes the traditional Thanksgiving holiday. But, the Thanksgiving holiday in Canada is not the same as the Thanksgiving celebration we have in America. The two don’t exactly run on the same lines. The United States observe Thanksgiving in November on the fourth Thursday of the month. In Canada, Thanksgiving occurs on the second Monday in October.
Thanksgiving in Canada began as a government idea. In America, Thanksgiving was known to be a religious holiday. In Canada, many are also celebrating the religious aspects of Thanksgiving. Giving God credit for all the blessings we have received is the basis for the celebration. Still, everyone celebrates Thanksgiving in Canada no matter what’s their belief or disbelief in God is.
Canada and America celebrate Thanksgiving just about the same way with the majority of the menu being very similar. Turkey, stuffing, spuds, cranberries, pumpkin tarts and several other treats.
A Canadian pioneer, Martin Frobisher instituted the first Thanksgiving celebration. Frobisher was a settler who searched for the Northwest Passage without success. When he founded a village in what is now Newfoundland, he had a party celebrating his survival. During the same times, the French settlers were successful at crossing the ocean. Once they arrived in Canada with Samuel de Champlain, they had a big celebration with the Indians.
In Canada they celebrate Thanksgiving Day much earlier than it is celebrated in America. Thanksgiving in Canada is timed to mark the end of harvests.
It is always nice to hear stories like this one.
