I know…by just mere looking at the black and white picture below, you might easily conclude a different story. No, this is not another one of those “gay” kinds of thing. You might be surprised to know the real story behind this attention-grabbing photograph.
This is a story which only happens rarely. Examining the picture closely, our first impression could be of two mature men kissing one another and of all places at the top of an electrical post. Now, nobody will ever blame you if that’s what you see because eyes can not lie. Or maybe there is something else…
The truth is that this is a picture of true and moving HEROISM. Yes, there is a love involved. The love of one’s fellow. This is a remarkable story of the great value of life. This illustrates the power within all of us to rise up from our own weaknesses and even just once show the best of what it means to be a human being.
The fist man on the picture was electrical lineman J.D. Thompson who breathed life into the mouth of his fellow lineman named Randall G. Champion who at this stage was hanging totally unconscious after accidentally getting a shock of high voltage.
The one who took this award-winning photograph was Rocco Morabito who happened to be driving on that specific West 26th Street in July 1967. He was actually on the way for a different assignment when passing by he saw Champion hanging from the pole and Thompson helping the other guy. Before instinctively grabbing his camera, he managed to call the ambulance.
Fortunately, Champion was able to fully recuperate from the accident. The photographer Rocco Morabito went on to bag the 1968 Pulitzer Prize for Spot Photography for this photograph entitled “The Kiss of Life.”
What a very wonderful and inspiring story!
